Old Fashion Christmas 5K, Volant, PA, December 17, 2011
Finally a run in the snow (someone actually wished for this) for the next-to-the-last race of the year for most of us. Thirty-eight Big Dawgs ran this one, including two new members. Meanwhile, one Big Dawg, John Antinossi, sat it out and took pictures. Why?...well, he pulled a muscle during his warm-up run. Hope it's not too bad.
Thanks to Herb Cratty and his volunteers for setting us out on a "challenging" course. However, some of us are wondering why there were no awards for 2nd & 3rd place Age Group finishers??? And kudos to the Big Dawgs for being over 31% of the entire field.

Another Big Dawg who managed the hot temps is Matt Antinossi (John's son). Chicago is his 6th Marathon of the year with a time of 4:09:29. Congratulations Matt. He's got one more to go...in New York. Good Luck Matt!

The Stepathon 5 Miler, Fineview Neighborhood, October 1, 2011
Without question, the most challenging & difficult race course I've ever been on. Consider that the best runners averaged over a 9 minute pace, up and down 1692 steps in 12 different staircases, slipping & sliding through trees and branches on muddy trails only one foot wide and sloping downhill on a 45 degree angle, braking on downhill runs because they were so steep you would surely fall over if you went all out. Danielle Lucas said
"I loved it!" I said it was diabolical. Just hit www.stepathon.org and see what you think. But you really have to experience the run to fully appreciate it. Will I do it again...No way! Well... maybe...Yeah, why not...OK, I'm in for next year, have to beat this year's time.

Great Race 5K & 10K, Pittsburgh, PA, September 25, 2011
All in all, it was a pretty good day for a race. It was a little humid and certainly warmer for the 10Kers since they got started 1-1/2 hours after the 5K. Anyway, thought it would be interesting to show the Age Graded results this time. Keep in mind that the results are for this run only, so if you are injured, sick, tired, or got up on the wrong side of the bed..this result might be lower than your usual. So, here we go:

Thanks to the heads-up from Bob Sforza, he pulled in an 8th place overall & AG 1st in 21:27 and Mark Knapp was 5th Overall & AG 1st in 20:55. Way to go Big Dawgs.
Bob said he went out for a run after the race but..."I also "accidentally" ran a 7.77 mile "cool-down" run after the awards (mostly because I took the wrong road at one point). My original plan was to do about 4 miles."

Erie Marathon & Half Marathon, Presque Isle, September 18, 2011
Three of our Dawgs travelled North to Erie to compete in this race...
Emmett (EJ) Santillo crossed the Marathon finish line in 3:06:01 to win the Masters and also place 16th Overall out of 521 finishers. Great run Emmett and Congratulations.
Emmett (ET) Santillo showed his skill by finishing the Half in 1:24:10 and winning 1st Place in his Age Group. Congratulations.
Also in the Half is Dawgette Nanette Paracca, finishing with a very good time of 1:58:17 and AG 13th/67. While Nanette may not realize it, she is in fact, a Big Dawg (recruited by Emmett (EJ) Santillo at the Grandparents, 2010) we have her in our roster, we have her picture with Emmett and now all she needs is a Big Dawg shirt.
(Nanette...if you have any reservations about this, please let me know and we will "Un-Big Dawg" you if you wish).

What a great day for a run...especially the 10 miler since it started the earliest. Nice and cool for a change and a nice and cool, rolling hill course. Hardest part is going out, but it sure was fun coming back. Many thanks from the Big Dawgs to Race Director Joella Baker (she's also a Big Dawg), her staff and all the volunteers for putting on one of the best races in the area. The food was abundant (pizza, donuts, cookies, etc., etc.) and very good.
The Big Dawgs made a good showing in the 10 Mile with 12 runners and also in the 5K with 11 runners, not to mention 2 new members (see the New Member page).
Also, ALL of our Big Dawg Runners in the 10 Mile & 5K placed either 1st, 2nd or 3rd in their respective Age Groups! Congratulations to all!

Tommy Mcnear hit this race...it's really like an Army Infiltration Course, with 12 difficult obstacles. Take a look at the video on http://warriordash.com Some people just like to get dirty. Tommy was AG 2nd out of 976 in 32:58:00.
Was just informed that a Big Dawg Dawgette crossed the finish line in 1:20:16, good for 840th out of 1165 in her Age Group...way to go...Robyn Stewart. Congrats to you and Tommy!

Rock & Roll Virginia Beach Half Marathon, September 4, 2011
Just spoke with Bob Walker who told me about the great time he and his daughter Teal, had in Virginia Beach. We also spoke about a Big Dawgs trip there next year, so keep Labor Day, 2012 open. We'll have more on this later so stay tuned.
In the meantime...Bob had a great run coming in 1st out of 46 in his Age Group, with a time of 1:49:52.
Daughter Teal also had a very good run placing 95th out of 996 in her Age Group (top 9.5%) in 1:54:19.
Way to go Team Walker and let's plan on next year.

We had twenty Big Dawgs at the race but we didn't get everyone in a picture, and having such a big crowd made it difficult too...so, if you were missed, we'll get you next time.
This year they had us starting in "timed waves" down by the River, which was probably a good idea on paper, but it really needs some more thought. Anyway, everybody got across the mats, through the course and finished in fine fashion inside Heinz Field.
Our fastest Big Dawg was Dan Dygert who made the circuit in 17:01 winning his Age Group 1st place.
Leslie Perry was next with 18:06 for AG 5th in a very tough Age Group. Danielle Lucas was our fastest Dawgette
coming in at 21:31 for AG 6th Scott Brown AG 17th 21:41 Gary Chabala AG 8th 21:42

I know Lou will get his violin out when he reads this posting but...it was HOT (85-90 degrees) and humid and not even the slightest breeze and the course was tough with many hills, and a really tough & long up-hill at the end on a brick road. Even the neighborhood Dogs found a shady place to rest and had no interest to bark as we ran by. Runners came in breathing hard and glistening with steam and tired. Heart rates were slow to recover (just ask Lou) and everybody wished they could have jumped into the nearby swimming pool. Water ran out and they went and got more. But there was pizza and beer and hot dogs and soft drinks and soon everything got back to normal. What a run...thanks Scott Baker.

The Davis YMCA Triathlon in Boardman, OH, Sunday 5/15
500 yard swim / 14.50 mile bike ride / 5K run...The swim got us wet, but the rain kept us wet. Anyway, as with most other races on Sunday, there was a lot of rain to go around, although I think it was better than an 80 degree+ day with the sun beating down. Three Big Dawgs entered this race and all finished in great position...

So rather than getting an AG first place with 25:07 and a pre-game Award Presentation at PNC Park at tonights game, he only got listed in the overall at 287th position out of 1882 finishers.

In the MINES, Saturday, 2/19/11
February 19th..."Runnin' Outta Our Mine 5K" in Wampum, PA. We avoided the cold and high winds Saturday for a Run indoors in 55 degrees...plus a little dust and some gravel, but all-in-all, it was a great experience. I counted 22 Big Dawgs in the race with
5-1st place and 6-2nd place finishes. This picture was taken after the awards, so some Dawgs had already left...we'll do better next time.
If you missed seeing it on FB...take a look at http://shar.es/3C5ar
It's a write-up of the race and a video.
